Blue Brontide is a Yorkshire-based British maker of sustainable wooden toys, children’s tableware and heirloom gifts, handcrafted from sustainably sourced oak. Blue Brontide is also listed in the Crafts Council Directory as a Designer, Toymaker and Woodworker.
There’s something rather special about making an object slowly, carefully and with the hope that it will become part of somebody’s family story. That philosophy has always been at the heart of Blue Brontide.
British-made wooden toys from Yorkshire
From our Yorkshire workshop, we design and make British-made wooden toys, children’s tableware and heirloom gifts using sustainably sourced oak.
Our own collection includes handcrafted sustainable wooden toys, wooden children’s tableware and flower presses, with each piece shaped, sanded and finished with care.
Rather than making things to be quickly replaced, we’ve always loved the idea of creating objects that can become part of everyday family life and gather memories as they go.
A wooden racing car that becomes a childhood favourite.
An oak egg cup brought out for slow weekend breakfasts.
A flower press filled with tiny treasures collected on family walks.
Why the Crafts Council matters to Blue Brontide
The Crafts Council celebrates craft and makers across the UK, highlighting the skill, creativity and knowledge involved in making things well.
Being included in its maker directory as a Designer, Toymaker and Woodworker feels particularly meaningful to us because designing and making are at the heart of Blue Brontide.
Our approach has always been simple: buy less, buy better, and choose things worth keeping.
That means carefully considering the materials we use, designing with longevity in mind and creating our own wooden collections here in Britain.
Sustainably sourced oak and thoughtful materials
For us, sustainability isn’t simply about how something looks. It’s about the materials used to make it, how thoughtfully it has been produced and how long it can remain useful and loved.
Our own wooden collections are made from sustainably sourced solid oak and designed with durability at their heart. We aim to create timeless pieces that can remain part of family life for years rather than being quickly replaced.
This approach runs through our wooden toys, children’s tableware and other handcrafted pieces.
What makes a Blue Brontide piece an heirloom?
When we describe our wooden toys and children’s pieces as heirloom pieces, we mean objects designed to be used, kept and, where possible, passed on.
A well-made wooden toy can outlast a particular stage of childhood. A favourite breakfast board or egg cup can become part of a family ritual. These are the small things that can gain meaning simply because they stay with us.
They are made for childhood, but not only for one childhood.
Blue Brontide: Designer, Toymaker and Woodworker
The Crafts Council describes Blue Brontide as a Designer, Toymaker and Woodworker — three words that neatly bring together the different parts of what we do.
From developing a new wooden toy or piece of children’s tableware to selecting the timber, shaping the wood and finishing each piece, making is central to Blue Brontide.
